80' Sci-Fi movie title?

It starts with this kid trying to trap an alien bug in a cup of some sort. Then the warehouse he is in, I think his father works there, is attacked by some army and then the kid stows away on a spaceship and befriends a bunch of rogue space travelers / outlaws. That's about all i can remember and i've been trying to remember the name of this movie for years. I'm watched it repeatedly as a kid.
