How do I go about fixing a hole in the wall?

the best thing is to cut the hole 16 inches wide,as square as possible. i say 16" because that is the standard spacing for wall studs.this way you don't have to add any braces.then you cut the patch to fit,approx. 1/4" smaller all the way around and finish the seams just as you said.
